Vacancy Announcement: Assistant Clerk (Political & Economic Affairs)

The Embassy of Japan in Belize is seeking one locally employed staff member for the position of Assistant Clerk in the Political & Economic Affairs Section. Details are as follows:
 
1. Qualifications
(1) Basic Requirements
  • University degree or higher academic background.
  • Belizean nationality or valid legal authorization to work in Belize.
(2) Skills and Experience
  • A degree in International Relations, Economics, Development Studies, Political Science, Communications, or a related field is desirable.
  • At least 2–3 years of relevant professional experience in political/economic analysis, trade, development cooperation, public relations, cultural affairs, or related fields is desirable.
  • Familiarity with Belizean and Central American/Caribbean politics, economy, foreign relations, culture, and society.
  • Strong research, analytical, report-writing, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare concise and accurate reports.
  • Excellent organizational and multitasking abilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
  • Experience using social media and digital tools is desirable.
  • Fluency in English and Spanish is required. Consecutive interpretation skills would be an asset.
  • Japanese language proficiency would be an asset.
  • Interest in Japan and Japanese culture.
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Flexibility and willingness to undertake duties related to the responsibilities listed below.
 
2. Main Duties and Responsibilities
  • Liaising and coordinating with the Government of Belize, local authorities, private sector entities, international organizations, and other stakeholders.
  • Collecting, researching, analyzing, and reporting on political, economic, and foreign affairs developments in Belize.
  • Providing interpretation and translation services in English and Spanish.
  • Accompanying diplomats to meetings and appointments, and preparing meeting notes and records.
  • Assisting in the preparation of speeches, presentations, and public communication materials for diplomats.
  • Assisting, as necessary, with economic cooperation, public relations and cultural affairs, consular, and security-related duties.
  • Performing other administrative and support duties as required for Embassy operations.

4. Employment Conditions
  • Salary: To be determined in accordance with Embassy regulations, based on qualifications and experience.
  • Contract Period: Initial contract period of one year, renewable subject to satisfactory performance following a three-month probationary period.
  • Duty Station: Embassy of Japan in Belize (Belmopan)
  • Working Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. (including one-hour lunch break), excluding Embassy holidays. Overtime work may occasionally be required depending on operational needs.
  • Expected Starting Date: August 3, 2026 (negotiable)
  • Benefits: Social security, paid leave, bonuses, and other benefits will be provided in accordance with Embassy regulations.
 
5. Selection Process
  • Applicants who are shortlisted will be contacted regarding the schedule for interviews and written examinations, tentatively planned for the week of July 6, 2026.
  • Successful candidates will be selected through interviews and written examinations.
  • Selected candidates will be subject to a background check and required to submit a Certificate of No Criminal Record.
