New Year Greetings from Ambassador Yamakura

Ambassador Yamakura
Happy New Year. I would like to extend my greetings as we welcome the New Year for the first time in Belize. I arrived in Belize on September 20 last year, and it has been just over three months since then. During this time, I have set foot, even if only briefly, in all six districts of Belize, and I have felt the country's diversity and high moral standards. With stable politics and economy, many bilingual and highly-skilled people, work is often enjoyable. Last year was designated as the Year of Japan-Central America Friendship Year, and government officials, including Prime Minister Briceño, visited Japan, further evolving and deepening the relationship between Japan and Belize. Belize is the only country that belongs to both CARICOM and SICA, serving as a bridge between Caribbean countries and Central America, and it is now aiming to become a bridge between Asia and this region as well. In order to advance cooperation with this important country, Japan recently signed the Exchange of Notes with Foreign Minister Fonseca regarding the reconstruction of the Swing Bridge in Belize City with Japanese grant aid. In a few years, the Swing Bridge will become a new bridge and may become a new landmark of Belize City. This year, I wish to continue putting effort not only into government-level cooperation but also in promoting mutual cooperation between the peoples of our two countries. I look forward to your continued support this year.
