Japanese “Awa Odori” meets Belize: Celebration of Garifuna Settlement Day and World Children’s Day (18-20 November 2025)
Toward the conclusion of the "Japan-SICA Friendship Year", culture came alive for this year's Garifuna Settlement Day celebrations. The festivities featured a vibrant cultural exchange highlighted by an energetic performance by Takarabune, a Japanese Dance Group whose high-energy Awa Odori dances captivate crowds with their joyful expression and dynamic traditional artistry. Their performance had everyone on their feet, dancing and feeding off their contagious energy. It was a true fusion of rhythms as Taiko beats met Belize's Punta vibes in an unforgettable celebration. Special thanks to the National Garifuna Council Belmopan Branch and the Pen Cayetano Studio Gallery in Dangriga for allowing us to partner with them to have Awa Odori performance twice in Belmopan and Dangriga respectively.
Ambassador Yamakura said in his opening remarks that this occasion was a meaningful step in Japan's growing cultural engagement with Belize, as we are committed to deepening our friendship not only through diplomacy, but through arts, music and traditions that truly connects our people. Culture really unites us across borders.
Following to the Garifuna Settlement Day, Takarabune also joined the celebration of the World Children's Day at the Saint Vianny Primary School in Belize City and brought an excitement to all the primary students there.
