Press conference regarding the start of the preparatory survey for the Swing Bridge replacement plan

On October 16th, Ambassador Shirakata attended a press conference regarding the start of the preparatory survey for the Swing Bridge replacement plan in Belize City, held by the Ministry of Economic Development and JICA Belize. He explained the significance of the survey, including that this year is the Japan-CARICOM Friendship Year.
Other attendees at the press conference included CEO in the Ministry of Economic Development, Mr. Carlos Pol; Chief Engineer in the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing, Mr. Evondale Moody; JICA Belize Director, Mr. Yoshikazu Tachihara and Survey Team Leader Mr. Hiroyuki Morimoto (Oriental Consultants Global).
The survey will be conducted through to November 2025 (1 year) by a JICA survey team to investigate the technical and economic feasibility and socio-economic impacts of the Swing Bridge replacement plan. The Swing Bridge was built in 1923 and the Government of Belize requested assistance from JICA in replacing it due to its severe deterioration.
